Sands Victoria is a community of parents, family members, friends, volunteers, staff, health professionals and financial supporters.
Sands Victoria works hard, along with Sands Australia and the other state offices, to provide the best peer-support services for bereaved parents.
Sands Victoria provides immediate and ongoing support to bereaved parents, families and friends. Sharing with others who have had similar experiences can assist parents to work through the often intense grief which follows the death of a baby.
Established in 1983, Sands Victoria has been supporting parents for over 30 years, and has also been educating health workers and medical professionals in the care of bereaved parents.
Sands Victoria services are delivered using a “peer-support” model by trained volunteers, known within the Sands Victoria community as “Parent Supporters”. Parent supporters are parents who have themselves have experienced the death of a baby and can genuinely empathise with the parents, families and friends accessing our services. Their training enables them of combine their empathy with real skills in offering helpful care through the support line and the support groups.
Miscarriage, stillbirth and newborn death is a serious issue in Victoria, with approximately 2.7 stillbirths and newborn deaths occurring daily. Sands Victoria is often the first step bereaved parents can take in a journey of active healthy grieving.
Sands Victoria is an incorporated association that works in close collaboration with Sands Australia, Sands South Australia, Sands Tasmania, and Sands Queensland.
